Russia Threatens to Target British Military Installations Amid Escalating Tensions
On Thursday, Russia raised alarms, indicating it might target British military sites both within Ukraine and beyond, following Ukraine’s alleged use of long-range British cruise missiles. The warning came after Russia claimed a Ukrainian strike on a shopping center in the Russian-controlled region of Donetsk, which reportedly injured civilians, including children.
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, stated that Britain was “one step away” from being complicit in what she labeled as a campaign of terrorism that targets civilians. She cautioned that if Britain did not change its course, it could lead to “catastrophic consequences.”
Zakharova emphasized that any British military facilities in Ukraine, as well as any British equipment used in strikes on Russian soil, could become targets in response to Ukraine’s use of British weaponry. Her comments were made during a news briefing in Moscow, where she urged British leaders to “immediately abandon” what she called a hostile and aggressive stance to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
Earlier this month, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited Ukraine on Independence Day, announcing plans for a defense contractor to disclose sensitive information regarding British components in long-range SCALP cruise missiles. These missiles, which can reach targets over 155 miles away, are similar to the Storm Shadow missiles supplied by the UK.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused the UK of “participating in the war” and inflaming the situation. In response, a representative from Britain’s Ministry of Defense reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating their commitment to aiding Kyiv in its defense against President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
Burnham’s visit and the discussions about the missile components come against a backdrop of rising tensions, as both sides exchange strong rhetoric. Russia had warned that Britain would face consequences after Ukrainian forces reportedly used British-made drones to hit military targets inside Russia.
Despite the escalating threats, Burnham condemned Russia’s actions and promised that Britain’s support for Ukraine would remain steadfast. Meanwhile, interactions at high-level diplomatic meetings continue, with discussions between Russian intelligence officials and U.S. counterparts, emphasizing ongoing geopolitical complexities in the region.
