Ratko Mladić, Notorious Bosnian Serb General, Passes Away at 84
Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb general infamous for his role in wartime atrocities during the Yugoslav Wars, has died at the age of 84. His death was confirmed by officials from the U.N. court in The Hague, Netherlands, where he had been receiving treatment.
Mladić, often referred to as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” had been in custody since 2011 after evading capture for years. In 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in extensive war crimes. His actions during the conflict, which resulted in over 100,000 deaths and displaced more than a million people, made him one of the most notorious figures of the time.
Under his command, Bosnian Serb forces took control of significant areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, besieging cities like Sarajevo. His troops were responsible for detaining non-Serb civilians in concentration camps and committing numerous acts of violence, including systematic executions.
Despite the gravity of the charges against him, Mladić displayed no regret. Upon receiving his life sentence, he reacted aggressively in court, expressing anger at the judges.
Mladić began his military career as a Communist officer and became a prominent figure during the breakup of Yugoslavia, initially leading Serb forces in Croatia before commanding the Bosnian Serb army. One of the most horrific incidents associated with him was the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica, where approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed in a supposed safe zone protected by Dutch peacekeepers.
His actions remain a painful memory for many, and reactions to his death vary widely. Some view him as a military leader, while others remember the immense suffering caused by his campaigns. In a statement to the media, a former soldier reminisced about him as an “honorable man,” highlighting the conflicting perceptions surrounding his legacy.
