Advent and Stripe Alliance Reportedly Abandon Bid for PayPal, According to Bloomberg News

Advent and Stripe Back Away from PayPal Acquisition Effort

On August 27, it was reported that a group consisting of buyout firm Advent International and payment processor Stripe has chosen to step back from their attempt to acquire the fintech giant PayPal. This information comes from Bloomberg News, which cited sources close to the situation.

As of now, neither PayPal nor Stripe has offered any comments on the matter, and efforts to reach Advent for a statement outside regular business hours were unsuccessful.

Back in July, sources revealed that the consortium had made a bid of $60.50 per share for PayPal, which valued the company at over $53 billion. This is quite a contrast to PayPal’s peak valuation of around $360 billion during the pandemic in 2021 when it was seen as a leader in financial technology.

PayPal’s board has reportedly viewed the offer as insufficient and has expressed concerns about potential regulatory and financing challenges they would face. The company has not made an official response to the bid.

Founded in the late 1990s, PayPal has been facing increasing competition from other payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay. As a result, its management is currently focused on revitalizing its stock price amid a period of slowed growth.
