SNP Leader Prepares for World Cup in Boston
Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn emphasized the need for the SNP leader to be “on his game” upon arrival in Boston for the Scotland men’s national team’s first World Cup match in nearly three decades. Mr. Swinney made the trip across the Atlantic in June, demonstrating the importance of this historic event.
Recent data released by the Scottish Government under freedom-of-information laws revealed that nearly £100,000 was allocated for Mr. Swinney’s expenses during his visit to Boston, alongside additional trips to Kentucky and Miami for the team’s final group game against Brazil. Flights for Mr. Swinney, his private secretary John Webster, and chief of staff Colin McAllister – all booked in business class – collectively accounted for more than £45,000 of this expenditure.
When asked about the costs during his appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Mr. Flynn remarked that he found it odd to expect the country’s leader to be anything but ready when arriving in Boston. He noted, “It’s all the more important that they arrive prepared for business.”
Interestingly, while Mr. Flynn also traveled to Boston, he flew in economy class via Dublin, contrasting with the business class tickets of the First Minister and his team.
Acknowledging his own experience, Mr. Flynn joked, “When I landed in Boston, I wasn’t quite at my best either, not just because of the economy flight, but perhaps due to feeling a bit tired or out of sorts.” However, he underscored the significance of Mr. Swinney and his staff being fully prepared to tackle their responsibilities.
He praised the dedication of the First Minister and his team, stating, “They work tirelessly behind the scenes, dealing with issues we often don’t see, and if they’re not performing at their best, that’s a bigger concern than whether they had a good night’s sleep on a plane.”
