Exploring Wealth and Legacy: Khalaf Al Habtoor’s Perspective

When we think of the richest person in the world, we often picture a name on a list. However, for Emirati billionaire Khalaf Al Habtoor, real success means much more than just a ranking.

In his recent statements, Al Habtoor honored the influential business families who laid the groundwork for Dubai and the UAE’s flourishing private sector. He emphasized that their true contributions go far beyond their wealth.

He mentioned notable families such as Al Ghurair, Al Futtaim, Al Mulla, Juma Al Majid, Al Gurg, Al Rostamani, Al Masaood, Al Fahim, and Khalifa and Omeir bin Yusuf. These pioneers were building their businesses long before Dubai and the UAE became renowned as global economic hubs.

“They created lasting businesses and shared knowledge across generations, which was crucial in developing the private sector we know today,” Al Habtoor remarked. This perspective reshapes our understanding of what it means to be successful in business.

Rethinking Business Rankings

Al Habtoor also voiced his concerns about rankings that list entrepreneurs based solely on their wealth. He believes that the worth of an entrepreneur cannot simply be summed up in a number.

“Every now and then, lists come out ranking businessmen in the UAE and Dubai — based on wealth, value, or how large their companies are,” he explained. “I sometimes find my name on these lists, but I often question the criteria used to create them.”

He pointed out the challenges in estimating the wealth of business owners, especially those with private companies, since their financial details are not publicly accessible.

“How can anyone reliably gauge the wealth of a business owner whose finances aren’t shared publicly?” he questioned, emphasizing that without access to these details, any figures remain merely guesses.

While it’s true that the market value of public companies can be assessed, Al Habtoor stresses that this shouldn’t automatically imply the personal wealth of their leaders.

“I don’t give much importance to rankings of ‘who is the richest’ or ‘who is the largest,'” he stated. Instead, he believes a businessman’s value should be based on what they have created, how long their enterprises last, the number of jobs they’ve generated, and their overall impact on the economy and society.

“Estimates can fluctuate, and rankings can change, but history will remember those who truly built something meaningful,” Al Habtoor concluded, highlighting that genuine success doesn’t require a place on a list.
