Sri Lanka Faces Injury Challenges Ahead of Second Test Against India
Sri Lanka’s cricket team is gearing up for the second Test match against India in Colombo, but they will be missing key players Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal due to injuries. Pathum Nissanka’s participation is also uncertain. The team is under pressure after losing the first match of the series by 165 runs in Galle.
Head coach Gary Kirsten confirmed that Mendis has a significant hamstring injury, sustained during the Lanka Premier League. “Kusal Mendis has got a proper hamstring injury. He’s not going to be available for a while,” Kirsten said.
Chandimal is sidelined with a neck and shoulder injury he picked up while fielding in the first Test, while Nissanka is recovering from wrist surgery. Following Chandimal’s injury, Pasindu Sooriyabandara came in as a concussion substitute but unfortunately went out on the first ball he faced.
The absence of these players puts Sri Lanka in a difficult spot as they look to bounce back in the series. They need a victory in Colombo to level the two-match series after India took a 1-0 lead.
Despite the setback, Kirsten remains optimistic about his team. He believes the players are beginning to understand the demands of Test cricket. “This is our third Test match in a couple of months, and I can already see the team developing,” he shared. He highlighted the team’s resilience, noting that they rallied from a precarious position of 99 for 5 in their first innings to take the match into the fifth day.
“There was a bit of fight shown by the team, and we were keen to stay in the Test match,” he added. Kirsten also pointed out that while they demonstrated spirit, issues with the batting order, particularly in both innings, ultimately cost them the match.
With injuries creating gaps in the lineup, Kirsten sees this as an opportunity for younger players to step up. “It’s a good chance for young players to come in and make their mark,” he said, emphasizing that there are promising talents with strong first-class records ready to seize the moment.
As the team prepares for the second Test, all eyes will be on the new faces that could potentially make a big impact. The challenges may be tough, but Kirsten and his squad are determined to fight back and perform well in Colombo.
