India’s Vice-Captain KL Rahul Reflects on First Test Victory Against Sri Lanka
India’s vice-captain, KL Rahul, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka, where they secured a commanding 165-run win. This victory not only marked a strong start for the team but also instilled confidence as they prepare for the second Test, set to take place in Colombo on August 23.
“It’s not so much a sigh of relief as it is happiness,” Rahul shared. “Every Test win is special, especially returning to Sri Lanka after so long. Many players are experiencing this place for the first time, so it’s a fantastic way to kick off our tour. We managed to address most of the key points we discussed before the match.”
The Indian team faced a significant challenge against spin bowling, especially after their recent difficulties in home matches against New Zealand and South Africa. However, in this Test, they handled Sri Lanka’s spinners effectively and maintained control throughout the contest.
Rahul highlighted how the team’s hard work on batting against spin contributed to their encouraging result. “This win brings us joy and boosts our confidence as we move into the next game in Colombo, especially with a challenging home series against Australia on the horizon,” he noted.
He also emphasized the importance of understanding spinning conditions and adapting their batting techniques accordingly. Rahul had taken the extra step of training at a facility in Mumbai before the tour, focusing on improving his game against spin bowlers.
Preparation, for Rahul, is essential. “I believe that how well you prepare before a series gives you the best chance to succeed, whether at home or abroad,” he explained. He had studied past matches in Sri Lanka to grasp when to attack and when to be cautious during innings.
His dedication to preparation helps him stay composed and make informed decisions during the games. “In recent years, I’ve put considerable effort into my mental and physical readiness, which in turn helps me feel balanced and focused during play,” he added.
Rahul also praised the performance of his Karnataka teammate, Devdutt Padikkal, who scored his first Test century, playing a crucial role in India’s first innings. “I think his innings was a defining moment of the match. He scored a vital hundred, setting the tone for our success,” Rahul said.
He expressed joy in witnessing Padikkal’s growth in the cricketing world and hopes the young player carries this confidence into future matches. “Seeing him score his first hundred after growing up together in Karnataka makes it even more special,” Rahul remarked.
With this victory under their belt, the Indian team looks forward to building on their success in the upcoming match.
