India faces a crucial challenge as they prepare to take on Pakistan in the Hockey World Cup 2026. While India currently holds the second position in Group D, their chances of advancing to the next stage hinge entirely on the outcome of this match on Wednesday, August 19.

HOCKEY WORLD CUP 2026: COMPLETE COVERAGE

In their opening match, India secured a 3-1 victory against Wales, but not without some defensive struggles. These issues became more evident in their second game against England. After falling behind early, India managed to pull ahead by halftime thanks to captain Harmanpreet Singh’s penalty corner goal, followed by a field goal from Dilpreet Singh, marking the team’s first field goal of the tournament.

However, England mounted a strong comeback after halftime, taking the lead before the end of the third quarter. Nick Bandurak then scored again, solidifying England’s position and ensuring their advancement in the tournament.

With the spotlight now on captain Harmanpreet and the team, it’s essential for them to avoid further setbacks to be in good standing for the next round. The looming question is: what will happen if Pakistan manages to either draw or secure a win?

INDIA’S PATH TO QUALIFICATION IN THE HOCKEY WORLD CUP 2026

For India to secure a spot in the next round, they need to either win against Pakistan or settle for a draw. Presently, they hold three points from their first two matches, while England leads the group with two wins under their belt. Meanwhile, both Pakistan and Wales sit at the bottom of the group, each with just a single point.

IF INDIA WINS AGAINST PAKISTAN

This outcome would be ideal for India, allowing them to reach six points without needing to worry about the result of the England vs. Wales game.

IF INDIA DRAWS AGAINST PAKISTAN

A draw would give India four points after three matches, which means they would depend on Wales’ next game against England. If England wins, India will secure second place and advance to the next round. However, if Wales manages to win, both teams will end up with four points, throwing the decision for the next round into a goal difference tie.

IF INDIA LOSES TO PAKISTAN

A loss would eliminate India from contention for the next round. In such a scenario, Pakistan would pass them in points, leaving India with the need to fight for positions between 9th to 16th place in the tournament.
