Barcelona has made a significant move in the transfer market by signing midfielder Rodri from Manchester City. The club announced the deal, which will keep the 30-year-old Spanish international with them until June 2030. This comes as Rodri was entering the last year of his contract with City.
The transfer fee is reported to be around £65.4 million, equivalent to approximately $88.56 million. Interestingly, Barcelona managed to outbid their rivals, Real Madrid, to secure Rodri’s signature.
In an official statement, Barcelona confirmed the agreement for Rodri, whose full name is Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante. The club stated that he would be committed to their cause until the end of June 2030.
Rodri joins the Catalan club after recently undergoing minor back surgery, which was expected to sideline him at the beginning of the upcoming season.
As a highlight of his career, Rodri, a winner of the Ballon d’Or 2024 and a key player in Spain’s European Championship victory, led his national team to World Cup success just last month, where he also earned the title of the tournament’s best player.
During his time at Manchester City, Rodri was an essential part of the team, contributing to their success under manager Pep Guardiola over six seasons. He helped the club secure four Premier League titles, the Champions League trophy, and two FA Cups after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019.
However, Rodri’s journey in recent years has not been without challenges, as he faced several injury issues, including a significant knee injury that kept him out for more than seven months in 2024. Despite these setbacks, he has proven to be a valuable asset to any team.
