Ceuta Sees Tragic Loss Amid Migrant Influx
Last week, the small Spanish enclave of Ceuta faced a heartbreaking situation when local officials reported that at least 72 individuals lost their lives during a significant surge of migrants crossing from Morocco. This overwhelming wave saw around 60,000 people attempt to reach Spain, most of whom have since returned to Morocco.
Miguel Angel Perez Triano, the government’s delegate in Ceuta, confirmed the updated death toll, which was previously recorded at 67. The border area has now largely returned to normal, with Spanish police and military patrolling the streets.
After the initial rush, only a few migrants remained in the enclave as many voluntarily made their way back to Morocco within 48 hours. This massive crossing has created an international crisis for Spain, leading to criticism from other European nations regarding its immigration policies.
On Sunday, armed soldiers were seen detaining a group of nine exhausted-looking migrants near a housing project close to Ceuta’s port. In the waters around the border, rescue units were actively searching, and security measures, including a new 500-meter floating barrier, have been put in place.
The atmosphere at the border was tranquil, with teams cleaning up debris left behind during the migrant influx. Spanish authorities have accused criminal gangs of spreading false information suggesting that a recent court ruling would make it easier for migrants to enter Spain.
Some analysts believe that Morocco might be leveraging the situation to apply diplomatic pressure on Spain, especially given Spain’s recent warming relations with Algeria, Morocco’s rival. In 2021, a similar situation occurred when around 10,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta after Morocco relaxed its border controls.
As concerns spread, the EU announced a video call for Tuesday, following a letter signed by 22 member countries urging a coordinated response to manage this crisis. In a related move, Italy has temporarily suspended the Schengen Agreement with Spain, affecting visa-free travel between the two countries.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his disappointment in a letter to EU leaders, criticizing what he described as a “selfish” response from some EU nations.
