Stay Safe in the Waves: Expert Tips to Prevent Shark Encounters This Summer

Shark Sightings Increase During Summer Months

As summer unfolds, shark sightings along U.S. coastlines become more frequent. While attacks on humans are rare, experts warn that they can happen.

August marks a significant rise in shark activity as these creatures migrate and search for food, often bringing various species closer to the shoreline. Dr. Chris Lowe, a marine biology professor at California State University, Long Beach, has noted an uptick in white shark sightings this year and anticipates an even larger presence in August, September, and October off the Southern California coast.

Despite the heightened presence of sharks, Wyatt Wernath, a spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association, assures that actual bites are infrequent. He mentions that there have been some minor incidents, with swimmers experiencing small bites on their feet.

To ensure safety while swimming or surfing, experts offer these six tips to avoid unwanted encounters with sharks:

1. Research Before You Swim

Before heading to a new beach, it’s crucial to check for local lifeguards and any recent shark sightings. Additionally, familiarize yourself with flag warnings that indicate swimming conditions: red flags signal danger, yellow flags mean caution, and green flags indicate safe waters.

2. Watch for Animal Activity

If you notice unusual activity among fish, birds, or seals, stay out of the water. This behavior might suggest a shark’s presence nearby, as fish may be fleeing from predators.

3. Stay Close to Shore

Although shark bites can happen near the shore, experts advise against straying too far into deeper waters. Encountering sharks in open ocean areas can lead to unforeseen risks, especially for those who are not familiar with the surroundings.

4. Avoid Swimming at Dawn and Dusk

Sharks are most active during dawn and dusk, elevating the chances of an encounter. Swimming in groups also reduces the risk, as sharks are less likely to target a larger number of people.

5. React Calmly in an Encounter

If you see a shark, it’s important to stay calm and slowly exit the water without splashing. Keeping your eyes on the shark can help you stay aware of its movements.

6. Respect Sharks as Wildlife

Understanding that sharks are intelligent creatures can help promote peaceful coexistence. They assess their environment before acting, and it’s crucial not to provoke them. Research shows that humans typically are not seen as prey by sharks.

Though more people and sharks are inhabiting the oceans due to conservation, shark bites are not rising as one might expect. Dr. Lowe points out that while bites can occur, they aren’t as common as people fear, and sharks often ignore humans altogether.

By following simple guidelines and respecting the ocean’s wildlife, beachgoers can enjoy their time without undue fear of shark encounters.
