Kerala Floods: Rising Death Toll Amidst Continued Rainfall
The recent flash floods in Kerala have led to a tragic rise in the death toll, with authorities discovering three more bodies on Monday morning, bringing the total to at least five. The floods were triggered by heavy rainfall, causing the Kottapuzha River to swell in the picturesque town of Nilambur, where six people went missing following the deluge on Sunday evening. Efforts are still underway to locate the sixth individual.
Flooding and landslides during the monsoon season, which lasts from June to November, are common in Kerala. In response to the ongoing situation, state Chief Minister VD Satheesan is expected to visit Nilambur soon to assess the damage.
Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts for six districts in Kerala, warning residents and local authorities to prepare for more heavy rainfall. An orange alert signifies the need for caution as it indicates the potential for significant weather impacts.
Asian Games: India Claims Four More Medals on Day Two
On the second day of the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, Indian athletes have added to the medal tally with two silver and two bronze medals, bringing the total to six. This event is traditionally a stronghold for India, with many of the country’s medals coming from the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.
In the men’s 10-meter air rifle event, shooters Himanshu Dhillon and former world champion Rudrankksh Patil achieved impressive results, winning silver and bronze respectively. This accomplishment followed their participation in the men’s team event, where they secured a silver medal along with teammate Parth Mane.
Also earning a medal was Suchika Tariyal, who fought bravely in the women’s traditional 60 kg mixed martial arts event, ultimately taking home a bronze after a narrow defeat against Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo. Tariyal’s emotional response to the close match highlighted her dedication and effort.
