India has strongly condemned recent attacks on commercial shipping and Indian seafarers in the Black Sea, calling them “absolutely unacceptable.” External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed this sentiment during a conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar shared details of their discussion, highlighting the serious nature of the attacks on maritime vessels. He emphasized that such actions threaten innocent lives and should not occur.
Jaishankar also mentioned that he received updates regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and ongoing peace talks. He reiterated India’s consistent position promoting dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes.
Moreover, he pointed out the precarious situation in the world, where various conflicts are affecting fuel, fertilizer, and food security, particularly for countries in the Global South. He expressed the intention to keep communication open with Ukraine.
This conversation came shortly after India summoned Ukraine’s Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk. The Indian government expressed deep concern regarding an attack on the commercial vessel MV OMORFI, which tragically led to the death of an Indian citizen.
The Ministry of External Affairs made it clear that such attacks jeopardize maritime safety and international trade, urging that they should stop immediately. The Ambassador was asked to relay India’s concerns to the Ukrainian government and to stress the need for protecting civilian lives at sea.
In related news, the Indian Embassy in Ukraine has been actively monitoring the situation of Indian seafarers stranded on a cargo vessel at Chornomorsk port. The embassy has prioritized their safety and is in close contact with relevant authorities to ensure their well-being.
