Hockey India Faces Backlash Over Jersey Color Change

Hockey India is once again at the center of controversy. After dealing with issues related to allegations of harassment and intimidation, the federation has stirred up more debate by changing the team’s traditional blue jersey to a bright orange, or saffron.

The new jersey was introduced as a representation of “courage, sacrifice, and national pride.” However, many fans and former players have expressed their discontent. Viren Rasquinha, a former captain, shared his disappointment on social media, stating, “While Hockey India has done great things for the sport, this move is embarrassing. The Indian team’s legacy has always been in BLUE. I wore that jersey with pride. Fans want to see our team in blue. What is the reasoning behind orange?”

The issue has even made its way into Parliament, with opposition leaders raising concerns that this could lead to further changes in military uniforms, suggesting that the ruling party, BJP, is trying to impose saffron everywhere. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra claimed that the jersey change indicates a broader attempt to alter the country’s identity and history. Fellow Congress MP Amar Singh warned that everything might be “saffronised,” including the army’s uniform. TMC leader Kirti Azad also questioned the motive behind replacing the classic blue jersey.

In response to the criticism, Hockey India released a statement explaining that the decision was made after consultation with players and coaching staff. They noted that the blue uniform often blended in with the blue synthetic playing surfaces, which could impact visibility on the field. As a solution, the coaches and players proposed colors like yellow or saffron, and after careful thought, saffron was chosen. The federation emphasized that this color also represents an important aspect of the National Flag, symbolizing courage and sacrifice.
