Rising HIV Cases in Fiji: A Growing Concern
Fiji, known for its stunning islands and tropical beauty, is facing a growing health issue as HIV infections rise sharply. For years, the country had almost no reported cases, but recent statistics show a startling increase of 14 times in the last five years.
Currently, it’s estimated that around 12,000 individuals are living with HIV in a nation of less than one million people. This surge has raised alarms among health officials.
Dr. Jason Mitchell, who heads Fiji’s National HIV Outbreak Cluster Response Task Force, explained that the rise in infections is largely due to risky behaviors associated with drug use, particularly among those injecting methamphetamines.
In January 2025, the country officially marked the outbreak, which initially affected only those who use drugs. However, Dr. Mitchell warns that the epidemic is now impacting various groups throughout the population.
As Fiji grapples with this public health challenge, experts continue to seek solutions to address and manage the outbreak effectively.
