DAMASCUS: UN Chief Calls for Lifting Sanctions on Syria
On Sunday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres ended his two-day visit to Syria with a strong message, urging the removal of all sanctions that were imposed during the rule of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad.
At a press conference in Damascus, Guterres acknowledged recent steps that have eased certain sanctions, allowing for some economic recovery. However, he emphasized that all sanctions should be lifted immediately to further support the country’s rebuilding efforts.
Since coming to power in December 2024, Syria’s new leadership aims to recover from over 13 years of conflict and to rejuvenate the economy as well as rebuild essential infrastructure and institutions.
Western nations, including the United States, have begun to lift some economic restrictions on Syria. Despite this, potential investors remain hesitant, as the World Bank estimates the cost of post-war reconstruction could reach around $216 billion.
Guterres stated, “The United Nations stands with the people of Syria at this critical juncture. I urge the international community to do everything possible to assist both the Syrian people and their government.”
He added that Syria is currently at a vital crossroads and highlighted the need for investment in the country’s people, economy, and institutions. The UN chief stressed the importance of restoring essential services, rebuilding infrastructure, and reviving livelihoods.
Additionally, he noted the urgent need for assistance in facilitating the safe and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced individuals.
