Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shines in Zimbabwe with Stellar Performances
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has truly made Harare a special place for himself. Earlier this year, the young star lit up the city during the Under-19 World Cup, and he returned on Sunday to add another exciting chapter to his journey. He not only led India to victory in the third T20I against Zimbabwe but also earned both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
The 15-year-old opener delivered an impressive performance by scoring 81 runs off 49 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes. This victory completed a commanding 3-0 series sweep for India. Sooryavanshi had already made headlines in the first match with a stunning 50 runs scored in just 19 balls, making him the youngest player to achieve a half-century in a men’s T20I match. He capped off the series with his highest score to date in international cricket.
Sooryavanshi’s two outstanding performances made him the first player in men’s T20I history to score multiple half-centuries before turning 16, showcasing incredible talent after facing challenges in England earlier this year.
Reflecting on his achievements after the match, Sooryavanshi expressed, “It’s truly a dream come true. I’m very happy to get my first Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards.” He added, “In all three matches, I aimed to give the team a good start. If I started well, I wanted to build a bigger innings. That was my goal.”
Harare’s Magic for Sooryavanshi
This tour of Zimbabwe highlighted Sooryavanshi’s skills, especially after a tough time in England, where he managed to score only 42 runs. Earlier this year in Harare, he made a name for himself during the ICC Under-19 World Cup by scoring an incredible 175 runs against England in the final, which helped India clinch the title and earned him Player of the Series honors.
His comfort in Harare was clear throughout the T20I series. With each match, whether it was his half-century in the first game or his impressive 81 in the final, he seemed right at home. Sooryavanshi mentioned that returning to Harare brought him confidence, thanking his teammates and coaches for their constant support.
“It felt great. Our preparation was solid during the two or three days after we arrived in Harare. Having played in the Under-19 World Cup here made it enjoyable for me. Everyone backed me—our captain, the coaches, everyone—so I’m really happy,” he said.
In the three-match T20I series, Sooryavanshi accumulated a total of 151 runs, averaging 50.33 and boasting a strike rate of 196.10. His success in Zimbabwe adds to what has already been an extraordinary year for the young talent. From leading in the IPL to becoming India’s youngest international player and now sweeping top honors in this series, Sooryavanshi’s rise in the cricket world has been nothing short of remarkable.
