The Case for a National Agricultural Intelligence Network in India

India’s farmers are some of the hardest-working individuals globally, yet they often make crucial farming decisions with limited information. While manufacturers know their supply chains and retailers track sales in real time, farmers make choices about what to grow and when to water based on fragmented advice and intuition. This reflects a lack of proper information resources rather than a deficiency in farming skill.

To unlock the next agricultural revolution, it’s essential to provide farmers with timely and reliable information that can support better decision-making.

Many farmers still rely heavily on local suppliers, fellow farmers, and traditional knowledge. Although government extension officers are meant to assist, their ability to offer specific guidance can be quite limited. This gap can lead to overuse of fertilizers, poor irrigation practices, and ultimately, lower yields combined with higher costs. Farmers are keen to learn and want effective, practical advice, but they often lack access to the necessary resources.

A significant obstacle in the agricultural landscape is the absence of proper crop planning. For example, if turmeric prices skyrocket this year, numerous farmers might shift to turmeric cultivation next season. However, two years down the line, the surge in production can lead to a collapse in prices, cycling through this issue across various crops. Farmers often don’t receive guidance on overproduction in their area or suggestions for potentially more profitable options like pulses or sesame.

Imagine if farmers had access to data-driven insights tailored to their districts—taking into account expected rainfall, market demand, and pricing trends—this could greatly empower their farming decisions.

Another pressing problem is the quality of exports. Many shipments are rejected due to pesticide residues or other quality issues, which stem from multiple sources, including poor record-keeping and mixed produce from different farms. Just one mistake can impact an entire consignment and tarnish India’s reputation in international markets.

Currently, information about agricultural practices is fragmented among scientists, universities, extension officers, and market players, making it hard for farmers to access comprehensive advice. What’s missing is a unified national agricultural intelligence network.

Imagine a system where every farmer receives personalized advice that is continuously updated based on their specific conditions—soil health, weather patterns, pest surveillance, and market trends—all in one place. In this scenario, instead of generalized recommendations like “apply pesticide,” farmers would receive alerts about potential pest issues based on their local environment, along with specific treatment suggestions only if symptoms arise.

Technology, particularly AI, plays a crucial role here. Daily updates could inform farmers about imminent weather changes, market demands, and pricing—truly transforming their farming practices.

Creating a unified agricultural digital infrastructure, akin to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), could connect various agricultural stakeholders. This platform could provide a digital identity for each farmer, detailing everything from land size to crop varieties and irrigation sources.

The platform should also offer critical insights into market conditions, financial options, and government schemes. Instead of merely reacting, it would proactively provide farmers with foresight and guidance.

This is where collaboration becomes vital. The government can set the standards, while universities and private companies contribute essential knowledge and practices. Everyone involved—from agricultural experts to logistics providers—would play a part in building this system.

A well-functioning network that anticipates farming challenges instead of waiting for questions could be one of India’s most impactful digital investments, benefiting farmers who work tirelessly but often see minimal rewards.

Ultimately, developing a national agricultural intelligence network is essential for empowering farmers and ensuring that they receive the support and guidance they need to thrive in today’s complex agricultural landscape.
