The Iranian Embassy in India has expressed its heartfelt thanks to the Indian government and its people for their presence at the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. In a social media post, the embassy highlighted that the participation of Indian political leaders, members of Parliament, scholars, and representatives from various religious backgrounds reflects the strong historical, cultural, and personal ties between India and Iran.
Reports indicate that around 100 individuals from Karnataka attended the funeral ceremonies held in Tehran. Many of these attendees are from Alipura in Chikkaballapur district, a village with strong connections to Khamenei, who had visited the area in the past. Some of those who went to Tehran are already living in Iran, either studying in religious schools, working in healthcare, or running businesses. Others traveled from Bengaluru on a chartered Iran Air flight.
Khamenei’s tragic death on February 28, following a joint airstrike by the United States and Israel, has had a profound impact on the Iranian community. His passing is felt as a national tragedy, especially as he also lost family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. For many in Alipura, Khamenei was a father figure, and the sense of loss is deeply felt.
The funeral drew representatives from over 100 nations, including India, illustrating Iran’s stability and the significance of its international relationships, even amid regional challenges. A 40-day mourning period, along with a week-long public holiday, has been established, uniting the nation in grief and strengthening a sense of collective solidarity.
Mr. Hakim Raza, president of the Indo-Iran Chamber of Commerce and Industries, remarked that Iran is committed to maintaining stability in the critical Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for energy security, especially for countries like India. The presence of an Indian political delegation at the funeral further underscores the long-lasting ties between the two nations.
