Report Uncovers Systematic Violence During October 7 Attacks in Israel

A recent report highlights the use of sexual and gender-based violence by Hamas and its supporters as part of a broader strategy during the tragic events of October 7, 2023. The Civil Commission on October 7 Crimes Against Women and Children released the findings that detail disturbing accounts of assaults targeted at women and children throughout the conflict.

The report reveals evidence of abuse at various locations, including the Nova Music Festival and nearby kibbutzim, as well as Israeli Defense Forces bases. Among the documented incidents were at least 13 types of recurring abuse, which included rape, sexual torture, and violence targeted at victims’ genital areas.

Dr. Cochav Elkayam-Levy, who founded the Civil Commission, shared the emotional toll on the investigative team as they processed graphic material describing human suffering. “We aimed to bring the truth to light despite the challenges,” she stated. The commission’s goal is to ensure that the world understands what the victims endured, advocating for justice on their behalf.

Among the horrifying details, the report describes incidents of sexual violence witnessed by family members and the use of digital platforms by attackers to amplify the psychological impact of their actions. Elkayam-Levy emphasized the need for a comprehensive understanding among policymakers, warning that true prevention of such atrocities requires a deeper insight into these crimes.

Furthermore, the report highlights that the victims came from over 50 different countries, underscoring the global ramifications of the attacks. Witness accounts detail shocking examples of violence, including sexual assaults and mutilation, further illustrating the urgent need for accountability.

Former hostages have shared their experiences of torture and sexual abuse, shedding light on the systemic nature of the violence. The report asserts the importance of international action against those responsible for the October 7 attacks, calling it urgent to prosecute these heinous crimes.

The commission advocates for targeted sanctions against individuals involved in the crimes and recommends that Israel establish a specialized judicial process for handling cases of sexual and gender-based violence related to the attacks.

Overall, the report seeks to ensure that these grave violations do not go unnoticed and urges global recognition of the need for justice for the victims.
