Local Manufacturing Firm Wins Prestigious Award for Innovation

A manufacturing company in Dronfield, known for creating high-quality fasteners, has been honored with the King’s Award for Enterprise, one of the highest accolades for businesses in the UK. This award recognizes companies that have made significant contributions in various categories, including innovation, which is where West Special Fasteners excelled.

West Special Fasteners specializes in producing strong fasteners and precision components that are crucial in some of the world’s toughest environments. The company’s products are used in notable structures like the Triton Submarine in the Mariana Trench and the Helix Bridge in Singapore. Each year, they manufacture around 850,000 nuts and bolts, primarily serving industries such as offshore energy, nuclear, and defense.

This year, West Special Fasteners was among 186 businesses across the UK to receive the King’s Award, further emphasizing its importance in the manufacturing sector. The King’s Award is like an MBE, awarded to companies that demonstrate outstanding performance and innovation.

Representatives from the winning companies often receive their awards at a special royal event hosted by King Charles at places like Buckingham Palace.

Founded in 1999 by a small team, including co-owner James Hawkins, West Special Fasteners has grown steadily, developing specialized components that are resistant to corrosion from challenging conditions like high temperatures and salty waters. The company’s products are utilized globally, from gas and oil platforms in the North Sea to high-rise buildings and innovative LNG projects in Australia.

James expressed pride in winning the award, highlighting their ongoing commitment to innovation over the years. “Keeping up with market changes requires constant improvement,” he said. “Winning this award for innovation is a tremendous honor for us all.”

The company has made significant strides in developing a new forging and heat treatment process, allowing them to work with advanced corrosion-resistant materials. This method not only enhances production efficiency but also reduces waste by up to 40%.

Sonja Skelton, another co-owner, shared her excitement about the recognition. “For a small engineering firm in Dronfield to receive a King’s Award is remarkable. Every employee plays a vital role in our success, and I hope we can continue this journey for many years.”

The achievement underscores the company’s dedication to both innovation and employee welfare, making it a proud representative of UK manufacturing.
