Argentina Investigates Possible Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to Landfill Tour of Cruise Passengers

Investigation Underway After Hantavirus Cases Linked to Cruise Ship

A bird-watching tour in Ushuaia, Argentina, is now the focus of a serious investigation. Argentine health officials are looking into whether a Dutch couple unknowingly brought the hantavirus onto a cruise ship after visiting a landfill site.

Investigators believe the couple may have come into contact with rodents at the landfill, which could have led to their infection. Prior to this incident, Ushuaia and the surrounding Tierra del Fuego province had never reported any hantavirus cases.

Hantavirus is typically spread through inhaling dust contaminated with rodent droppings. While the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that human-to-human transmission is rare, it is still a possibility.

The cruise ship, MV Hondius, has been linked to an outbreak that has sadly resulted in three passenger deaths and left several others ill. Health authorities are now tracing contacts across Europe and Africa, checking on those who were on board when the outbreak occurred.

Testing in countries like Switzerland and South Africa has confirmed the strain involved is the Andes strain, primarily found in Argentina and Chile. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely due to its potential to spread, even if it’s infrequent.

In Switzerland, a man who was on the cruise sought medical help after experiencing symptoms and tested positive for the Andes strain. He was quickly isolated to prevent further spread. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that three more suspected cases have been evacuated from the ship, with the aim of receiving treatment in the Netherlands.

Despite the alarming situation, Tedros stated that the overall public health risk remains low for the general population as the investigation continues.
