Excitement Builds for Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade

This Saturday, the city of Surrey, B.C., will come alive as hundreds of thousands gather for the annual Vaisakhi parade, marking one of the largest Sikh harvest celebrations outside of India. Organizers anticipate that around 600,000 people will attend, celebrating community, delicious food, and the Sikh values of service and generosity.

To accommodate the event, Surrey police will implement several road closures. Attendees should prepare for significant delays, particularly between 72 Avenue and 88 Avenue, as well as along Scott Road and King George Boulevard.

The vibrant parade will begin at 9 a.m. PT at the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, located on 85 Avenue.

A Tradition of Giving

One of the parade organizers, Akashdeep Singh, has participated since childhood and has been helping to organize the event for over five years. He emphasizes that the parade allows the Sikh community to demonstrate its commitment to generosity, especially through the tradition of serving free meals to everyone.

Singh said, “It’s about looking out for each other, and being available for everyone.” This spirit is central to their celebrations and events.

Vaisakhi has roots in Sikh history, commemorating the establishment of the Khalsa order in 1699, a pivotal moment that shaped the Sikh faith.

Growth Over the Years

Moninder Singh, another key organizer, has been involved since 2007. He notes that the parade has grown remarkably, from attracting just 55,000 participants to becoming the massive celebration it is today. He attributes this growth to Surrey’s vibrant culture and the interest in learning about the Sikh faith from the wider community.

Safety remains a priority; despite the event’s long history without serious incidents, organizers are increasing security measures this year, especially following concerns after a tragedy at another festival last year. Major roads will be blocked to keep vehicles away from the parade route.

Important Safety Tips

The Surrey Police Service is encouraging families attending the parade to create safety plans and keep a close watch on their children. Drones will be prohibited over the parade for safety reasons.

For those planning to attend, organizers recommend using public transit to reach the event. More detailed information about road closures can be found on the City of Surrey’s website.

As the parade approaches, excitement is building in the community, emphasizing celebration, togetherness, and the rich cultural heritage of the Sikh community.
