Sanju Samson Set for Hero’s Welcome in Thiruvananthapuram
Sanju Samson is about to receive a warm welcome in Thiruvananthapuram after his outstanding performance in India’s victorious T20 World Cup journey. The Kerala government plans to hold an official reception for the wicketkeeper-batter, who was named Player of the Tournament due to his series of match-winning innings that helped India defend their title.
According to a report, V Sivankutty, Kerala’s General Education and Labour Minister, confirmed on Monday that the state will organize a reception in the capital city to celebrate Samson’s key role in India’s World Cup success.
Samson, who comes from the coastal town of Vizhinjam, has made the people of Kerala incredibly proud with his performances throughout the tournament, said the minister.
While the exact date of the reception is still to be decided, it is sure to be a memorable event.
India claimed the T20 World Cup title in a stunning manner, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, successfully defending their championship with a fantastic performance.
From Uncertainty to Star Player
Samson’s path to becoming Player of the Tournament was not easy. Initially, he was not in the playing XI, having been left out after a tough bilateral series against New Zealand earlier this year, where he scored only 46 runs in five matches.
His chance came when teammate Abhishek Sharma fell ill. Despite coming back into the squad, he briefly returned to the bench once Abhishek recovered. However, following troubles with their left-heavy batting lineup, India decided to change their batting order, giving Samson another shot.
He made a comeback in a crucial match against Zimbabwe in Chennai. Although he showed signs of returning to form, his breakthrough moment happened during the Super Eight stage.
Key Performances that Shaped the Tournament
The pivotal moment for Samson came in a challenging match against the West Indies, where India needed to chase down 196 runs. Samson responded with a brilliant unbeaten 97, guiding India through the match and keeping their campaign alive.
He continued to shine in the semifinal against England at the Wankhede Stadium by scoring a rapid 89 runs, helping India set a massive target of 253.
In the final against New Zealand, Samson delivered another impressive performance. His 46-ball 89 was crucial in setting a record-breaking total of 255, which proved too much for New Zealand to chase.
After the victory, Samson expressed his disbelief at the success: “It feels like a dream. I’m happy and grateful, and I’m overwhelmed with emotions. It feels a bit surreal.”
For a player whose immense talent often led to high expectations, Samson’s World Cup journey finally met the hopes of millions of Indian fans, winning him a hero’s welcome back home.
