Australia and India Seek Stronger Cultural Ties, Says Envoy
In a recent event in New Delhi, Australian Ambassador Philip Green highlighted the strong economic ties between Australia and India, emphasizing the need for a deeper relationship built on understanding each other’s cultures.
At the event, held at the Australian High Commission, Green noted, “We produce goods that complement each other’s needs, but it’s important to go beyond that.” He stressed the importance of sharing stories and experiences between the two nations.
The evening featured performances by two talented musicians of Indian descent, Reuben de Melo and Milan Ring, who showcased their music before an audience of friends from the High Commission.
Green remarked, “This occasion is significant as we continue to develop our partnership across various sectors, including defense, education, and culture.” He pointed out that there are now over a million people of Indian origin living in Australia, marking the fastest-growing community in the country. “They are making meaningful contributions to our society, and we hope they will further enhance our bilateral ties,” he added.
The ambassador also emphasized the role of culture in strengthening India-Australia relations. He stated, “While our economies are linked, the cultural connection is vital to our partnership.”
The “Gig on the Green” event was an effort to showcase the richness of Australian culture in India, as well as to celebrate the artistic achievements of those with Indian roots in Australia.
Reuben de Melo, an indie folk singer originally from Goa, shared his thoughts about being back in India after moving to Australia at age 11. He remarked, “It’s wonderful to be here. I carry fond memories from my childhood in Goa with me.”
De Melo, famous for winning “The Voice Australia” in 2024, performed a variety of songs, including the Bollywood favorite “Give Me Some Sunshine.”
Milan Ring, who has a mixed heritage and is also making her mark in the music scene, performed many of her original songs, some of which are yet to be released. She expressed her excitement about being in India, saying it has been on her bucket list for a long time.
“I just arrived, and I’m looking forward to experiencing India’s vibrant culture, music, and delicious food,” Ring said, eager to absorb everything the country has to offer.
Ambassador Green’s comments reflect a vision for a robust partnership between the two nations, driven by a mutual appreciation for culture and creativity.
