Indian Consulate in San Francisco Celebrates Republic Day

On January 26, the Indian Consulate in San Francisco celebrated India’s 77th Republic Day with an event that brought together over 150 members of the Indian community, local officials, and representatives from over 50 countries.

Hosted by Consul General Dr. K. Srikar Reddy, the ceremony centered around the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram.” Republic Day is a significant occasion, marking the day in 1950 when India’s Constitution came into effect, establishing it as a sovereign democratic republic.

In his address, Consul General Reddy praised the contributions of the Indian community in the United States. “In the Bay Area, we have about 550,000 people of Indian descent,” he noted. “They serve as a vital link between the U.S. and India, showcasing hard work and innovative spirit in various sectors like technology and education.”

Reddy also highlighted California’s decision to recognize Diwali as an official holiday, noting it was proof of the Indian community’s positive impact on the state. He emphasized efforts to connect Indian startups with local investors and institutions, mentioning an upcoming visit from a delegation of Indian tech leaders.

The Consul General stressed the importance of collaboration in technology and innovation. “We regularly host delegations aimed at fostering these connections,” he added, indicating a forthcoming visit from the NASSCOM delegation to strengthen ties between innovators in both regions.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie attended the event as the chief guest and spoke about the shared democratic values between India and the U.S. “The Indian community is pivotal in shaping the future of our city,” he said, referencing San Francisco’s partnership with Bangalore in various fields, including technology and climate innovation.

Other officials, including Carmen Montano, the Mayor of Nautilus City, commended the organizers for uniting the community and celebrating Indian culture. The day’s significance was reiterated by Deputy Consul General Rakesh Adlakha, who expressed pride in the enthusiasm displayed by the Indian diaspora.

Participants from several foreign missions also attended, highlighting the importance of international collaboration. Paul Salvaire from the French Consulate mentioned ongoing joint efforts with India.

As part of the celebration, renowned Indian filmmaker Bharat Bala screened his short film “Aham Bharatam (I Am India).” He talked about his cultural project aimed at showcasing stories from India’s diverse regions and said it would involve young creators in sharing their perspectives.

Among the attendees was Dr. Sarabjit Singh, who expressed the patriotic spirit of the gathering. He shared his experiences in academia since moving to the U.S. in 2019 and emphasized the importance of celebrating India’s Constitution and democratic values.

The event was a heartfelt tribute to India’s rich heritage and the valuable contributions of its diaspora in the U.S.
