India Signs Major Helicopter Deal with HAL
New Delhi: On Friday, India finalized a significant contract worth ₹62,700 crores for the purchase of 156 homegrown ‘Prachand’ light combat helicopters (LCHs) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This deal marks a historic milestone as it’s the largest of its kind, following approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by the Prime Minister.
The agreement includes 90 helicopters for the Indian Army and 66 for the Indian Air Force (IAF). These helicopters are equipped with advanced weaponry, including 20mm guns, 70mm rocket systems, and air-to-air missiles. They will be crucial for offensive operations and precision strikes, especially in challenging terrains like eastern Ladakh and the Siachen Glacier.
In addition to the 156 new LCHs, the deal encompasses essential equipment and training, although taxes are not included in the total cost. Previously, India had inducted 15 LCHs under a contract worth ₹3,887 crores in 2022. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that the Prachand helicopters are powerful and represent a significant enhancement in India’s defense capabilities and self-sufficiency.
Furthermore, the Cabinet Committee on Security also approved a new defense cooperation agreement with Sri Lanka, preparing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the country.
Earlier reports indicated that both the helicopter and artillery system deals were expected to be approved before the end of the fiscal year. However, contracts for the direct acquisition of 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets from France and the construction of three additional Scorpene submarines have been postponed until the next fiscal year.
The production of the 156 LCHs will occur at HAL facilities in Bengaluru and Tumakuru, with deliveries set to begin in three years at a rate of 30 helicopters per year.
