Boston: Alert Issued by Indian Consulate Over Rise in Scam Calls
The Consulate General of India in Boston has issued an important warning regarding a surge in scam calls targeting the Indian community and other residents. Fraudsters have been impersonating officials from Indian diplomatic missions and law enforcement agencies, misleading individuals for personal information and payments.
In a recent advisory shared on social media, the Consulate stated, “Scam Alert! We have received reports of fraudsters pretending to be Indian Embassy or Consulate officials. Please take this warning seriously.”
The advisory highlighted that these scammers often use fear tactics, pressuring victims into divulging sensitive information or making financial transactions. They might falsely claim that a person’s mobile number is connected to illegal activities in India or suggest there are issues with passports, visas, or immigration documents. They may even make serious allegations about involvement in money laundering or similar cases, threatening legal action or arrest.
Furthermore, the advisory explained that these fraudsters often demand immediate action and might insist on isolating victims or asking them to join video calls. Victims are frequently asked to share personal, financial, or identity information that can lead to identity theft or fraud.
The Consulate made it clear that its officials will never ask for payments or sensitive information over the phone. They emphasized that they would not threaten individuals with arrest or deportation or require them to join video calls to settle any legal issues.
“All official communications are made through official email only,” the Consulate stated.
Moreover, the advisory clarified that real law enforcement agencies do not conduct investigations through phone or video calls.
The mission advised anyone receiving suspicious calls not to panic or comply with the scammers’ demands. Instead, they recommend hanging up immediately and reporting the call to local law enforcement and the Consulate at cons.boston@mea.gov.in.
This advisory comes amidst increasing reports of complex impersonation scams that particularly target the Indian diaspora abroad. The Consulate urges everyone to stay alert and rely solely on official channels for any communications related to consular or legal matters.
