Smriti Mandhana Expresses Readiness to Lead Indian Women’s Cricket Team
Smriti Mandhana has confidently expressed her willingness to take over from Harmanpreet Kaur as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team whenever the opportunity arises. As the current vice-captain, she believes her experiences have equipped her to step into a leadership role.
In a recent interview, Mandhana stated, “Yes, of course. I am ready,” when asked about the chance to captain the team in Harmanpreet’s absence. Her record bolsters her confidence; the 29-year-old has already led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs, achieving victory in 15 of those matches. India remains unbeaten in the four ODIs she has captained, showcasing her capabilities as a strong candidate for future leadership.
Over time, Mandhana has transformed from a reliable batswoman to a capable leader, particularly in challenging situations. Her years as vice-captain have provided her valuable insights into making decisions and managing the team effectively.
These remarks come in light of India’s remarkable tour of England, which included a historic win in the inaugural women’s Test match held at Lord’s.
A HISTORIC VICTORY AT LORD’S
Mandhana reminisced about the extraordinary achievement at the iconic Home of Cricket, where India triumphed over England by a substantial 270 runs. After scoring 285 in their first innings, India declared at 341 for seven in the second, eventually bowling England out for scores of 170 and 186.
“It was amazing to be part of the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s and, more importantly, to win it. Contributing to such a significant victory for India was incredibly special. As children, we all dreamed of playing Test cricket, and doing it at Lord’s made it even more memorable,” Mandhana reflected.
She played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring 83 runs in the first innings and adding a solid half-century in the second, laying the groundwork for one of the most significant wins in Indian women’s cricket history.
This triumph at Lord’s came as a relief following a disappointing T20I series loss to England and an early exit from the Women’s T20 World Cup.
For Mandhana, this remarkable win symbolizes the progress Indian women’s cricket has made. With Harmanpreet continuing to lead, the team can feel reassured knowing that an experienced player like Mandhana is ready to step up whenever required.
