Jaishankar Engages with Indian Community in Manchester

Manchester: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with members of the Indian community and local business leaders at the Old Trafford cricket ground on Saturday. During his visit, he discussed important issues like globalization and the numerous opportunities it presents, while also drawing parallels between the worlds of sports, diplomacy, and politics.

In his interaction, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of global engagement. He acknowledged the challenges of globalization but stressed that the world is full of potential. "For India, the global landscape is more about opportunities than challenges. We want to engage more with the world—whether through trade, mobility, investment, or tourism," he said, highlighting India’s confident outlook on international relations.

Connecting Sports and Diplomacy

While addressing the audience at Manchester, Jaishankar made a heartfelt reference to the Old Trafford stadium, where cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar scored his first century. He mentioned his admiration for cricketer Jimmy Anderson when discussing the discipline required in both sports and diplomacy. "Discipline, diligence, and creativity connect both fields," he noted, expressing his fascination with how similar attributes are needed in both arenas.

Jaishankar also took the opportunity to officially open a new Consulate General of India in Manchester, marking an important development after nearly 40 years without one. He stated, "We are working to correct the oversights of the past. Much has changed in our relationships and the Indian community here."

Reflections on India-UK Relations

When discussing the relationship between India and the UK, Jaishankar acknowledged its complex history, stating, "Our connection is deep-rooted but not without its challenges." He emphasized the importance of recognizing the positive aspects of this relationship. "In any significant relationship, it’s crucial to focus on the good," he added.

Looking to the future, Jaishankar expressed optimism about strengthening ties, particularly regarding ongoing discussions on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). He noted, "As we examine the current global scenario, the case for deepen these ties becomes stronger."

On the previous day, Jaishankar had inaugurated a new Indian Consulate in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with the intention of better serving the needs of the local Indian community.
