Title: Prime Minister Modi Unveils New Wildlife Conservation Initiatives on World Wildlife Day

On World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made important announcements aimed at enhancing wildlife conservation across India. During a meeting of the National Board for Wildlife held on Monday in Gir, Gujarat, he unveiled nine key decisions focused on protecting and preserving various species and habitats.

Among the most significant announcements was the laying of the foundation stone for the National Referral Centre for Wildlife in Junagadh. This centre will serve as a key hub for managing wildlife health and disease issues. Additionally, Modi announced that the next population estimation of Asiatic lions will take place in 2025. The last estimation was conducted in 2020, and this exercise is crucial for monitoring the lion population every five years.

In an exciting development for biodiversity, the Prime Minister also detailed plans to introduce cheetahs into new locations such as the Gandhisagar Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh and the Banni Grasslands in Gujarat. Moreover, he highlighted a new initiative focused on gharial conservation and a National Great Indian Bustard Conservation Action Plan.

Another noteworthy aspect of the announcements was a comprehensive survey report stating that there are approximately 6,327 river dolphins in India. This first-ever estimation underscores the commitment to improving the habitat and conservation measures for these unique marine mammals.

Modi emphasized the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts, especially regarding dolphin protection. He encouraged initiatives like organizing visits for schoolchildren to dolphin habitats to foster greater awareness and appreciation for wildlife.

The Prime Minister also addressed human-wildlife conflicts by proposing the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at the Wildlife Institute of India in Coimbatore. This centre will support state and local teams with advanced technology to monitor and manage conflicts effectively, ensuring both wildlife and human interests are met.

Recognizing that natural habitats face threats from various factors, Modi advocated for using innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and remote sensing to tackle challenges like forest fires and human-animal conflicts. He encouraged collaboration between wildlife organizations and technology institutions to enhance forest management and conservation strategies.

In a strong push for habitat improvement, Modi noted that lions have started expanding into new areas like Barda Wildlife Sanctuary. He reaffirmed the government’s support for enhancing habitats and prey availability to strengthen lion conservation efforts.

During the meeting, Modi laid out a roadmap for India’s wildlife conservation strategy and called for the creation of task forces to focus on the conservation of various species, including the Indian Sloth Bear and Great Indian Bustard. He also encouraged collecting traditional knowledge from various regions to inform these efforts.

As India continues to prioritize wildlife conservation, these significant decisions reflect a forward-thinking approach dedicated to safeguarding the country’s rich biodiversity for future generations.
