Falun Gong Survivor Reveals How CCP Shattered Her Life Before Trump’s Visit to China

Wang Chunyan: A Testimony of Perseverance Amid Persecution

Wang Chunyan holds a photograph close to her heart, trembling as she points to the smiling faces of 21 individuals: her husband, a university teacher, a young engineer, and friends she met in prison. Tragically, she reported that many of them died while imprisoned, endured years of mistreatment, or vanished within China’s extensive security system. “More than 25 of my friends have died in this struggle. I can only show you photos of 21,” she said, her voice choked with emotion.

For over twenty years, the 70-year-old Falun Gong practitioner has faced the wrath of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which has methodically torn apart her life—taking her business, her family home, and imprisoning her for seven years. The heartbreak is intensified by her belief that her husband, Yu Yefu, paid the ultimate price for her practice, a claim she made during an interview.

As global attention shifts to China, especially with upcoming meetings between leaders, a hidden battle rages within the country—a long-standing campaign against spiritual groups that the CCP deems a threat.

Former U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, emphasized that Wang’s story mirrors a larger struggle within China. “Either the world will influence China, or China will influence the world,” he stated, highlighting the importance of personal accounts in understanding the severity of persecution.

Wang’s journey began in the late 1990s when she faced insomnia. Her sister introduced her to Falun Gong, a spiritual practice focused on meditation and values like truthfulness and compassion. The movement grew rapidly in the 1990s but was banned by the Chinese government in 1999, which labeled it as a danger to its authority.

For Chunyan, Falun Gong improved her health and brought joy to her life. “I was thriving, and my family was happy,” she recalled. But as the crackdown began, she felt compelled to defend the movement against what she perceived as government lies.

She started printing leaflets, but that act of courage led to constant surveillance and fear. “Everywhere I went, I felt eyes on me. I had to be careful,” she remembered.

For years, she and her husband met secretly to escape the watchful eyes of authorities. Yu didn’t practice Falun Gong but refused to reveal his wife’s location to the police. Then, in 2002, communication ceased. When Chunyan finally returned home, she discovered her husband unconscious. Despite doctors’ efforts, he could not be saved. “He protected me,” she tearfully recalled.

The aftermath was devastating. Chunyan’s mother-in-law lost her will to live, her father-in-law succumbed to grief, and many of her family members were imprisoned and tortured. Eventually, Chunyan became a prisoner herself, enduring forced labor, sleep deprivation, and physical abuse.

She vividly remembers a harrowing experience before her release when authorities conducted medical tests. Although told they were checking on Falun Gong practitioners, the thought of potential forced organ harvesting filled her with dread. “I was horrified,” she confessed.

Now residing in the United States after leaving China in 2013, Chunyan continues to carry the weight of her past. “Millions of families in China suffer like mine,” she stated, emphasizing the CCP’s relentless persecution.

In a written response, a spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy denied Chunyan’s claims, branding Falun Gong as a “malicious cult” and arguing that its banning was crucial to protecting the rights of the Chinese populace.

The crux of Wang Chunyan’s story underscores the personal toll of a broader political conflict, reminding us of the human struggle for freedom and belief in the face of oppression.
