Why 1,000 Global Citizen Scientists Bury Their Cotton Undies for Research

What happens when you bury a pair of cotton underpants in the ground and return two months later? This question intrigued nearly 1,000 citizen scientists in Switzerland, leading to a unique and eye-opening discovery about the soil beneath our feet.

In a large-scale citizen science project, participants buried over 2,000 pairs of cotton underpants and 12,000 tea bags at various locations across Switzerland. The objective wasn’t a joke; researchers aimed to see how quickly the cotton would decompose to understand the vitality of the soil’s ecosystem.

The findings, shared in a study published on August 26 in New Phytologist Foundation, indicated that a simple pair of cotton underpants could provide valuable insights into soil health and its fertility. Moreover, it encouraged people to pay more attention to this vital resource often taken for granted.

The More They Disappeared, the Healthier the Soil

Soil is teeming with bacteria, fungi, and countless tiny organisms that help break down organic materials. Researchers chose cotton underpants as a straightforward way to observe this natural process.

Participants buried two pairs at each site and dug them up after one and two months. The concept was simple: the more the fabric decayed, the more biologically active the soil was likely to be. After one month, the underpants lost about 10% of their material. By the two-month mark, more than 50% of the cotton had decomposed. This measure was dubbed the “Underpants Index” and was compared to the already known Tea Bag Index, which also measures organic material breakdown in soil.

Private Gardens Showed the Most Decomposition

The location where the underpants were buried influenced the results significantly. Private gardens had the highest average decomposition rate, with around 58% of the fabric deteriorating after two months. Lawns showed the lowest at roughly 40%, while farmland and grasslands were somewhere in between.

The researchers found that land use had the strongest impact on decomposition rates. Soil nutrients and other factors also played essential roles in the process. These findings suggest that the underpants test might reflect soil fertility and the biological activity of decomposition more accurately than a broad measure of soil health. This is important since a quicker decomposition rate is not always indicative of a healthier ecosystem.

Simple Science for Everyone

The project also aimed to simplify soil science for everyone. Professional soil testing often requires advanced equipment and technical know-how. However, a buried pair of cotton underpants provides clear visual evidence that anyone can interpret. Participants could easily observe how much of the fabric had disappeared.

This initiative showcased the power of citizen science. Around 1,000 individuals helped researchers gather data from hundreds of sites—something a small research team could not have done alone.

While the researchers acknowledge that this method does not capture the complete picture of soil health, it serves as a straightforward introduction to what lies beneath the surface. It reminds us that soil is much more than just dirt. In essence, the condition of buried underpants offers a glimpse into the vibrant life under our feet.
