Virginia Tech Launches New Center to Tackle Drone Threats
BLACSBURG, Va. — Drones have become a common part of our lives, helping with everything from delivering packages to providing real-time video footage. However, as these flying machines become more advanced, they also pose risks to important locations like airports, military bases, and large public events.
To address these concerns, Virginia Tech has opened a new outdoor facility dedicated to researching and testing counter-drone technologies at its Kentland Farm site in Blacksburg. The new Counter-UAS Testing and Research Center will allow researchers to experiment with drone detection and tracking systems in a real-world setting.
This facility is one of three environments available for testing at Virginia Tech, including indoor and virtual spaces. Researchers will focus on assessing how well different systems can detect and manage various types of drones, especially as the number of these aircraft continues to rise.
A significant part of the research will involve testing drone swarms—the use of multiple drones flying together. Tombo Jones, the director of Virginia Tech’s Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, explained that the team aims to discover how many drones a counter-drone system can handle before becoming overloaded.
At the center, visitors had the chance to see various drones and the technology used to identify them during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Jones emphasized that the goal is not to create drones but to study and enhance the technology to counter them.
The project is being developed in collaboration with the U.S. Army, allowing Virginia Tech researchers to receive weekly insights on emerging threats they may face on the battlefield.
U.S. Senator Mark Warner also attended the opening and highlighted the rapidly changing landscape of drone technology. Warner suggested inviting experts from Ukraine, who have hands-on experience with drone warfare, to help at this new facility. He envisions it as a leading site for studying flight patterns and drone detection.
Warner pointed out that keeping up with these advancements means the center must continuously evolve rather than spend too long analyzing a single threat.
The center took about three years to come together, with support from Virginia’s congressional representatives and the Department of Defense. The first group of students is set to start using this new facility this semester.
Ultimately, Virginia Tech aims to assist government agencies in identifying the most effective counter-drone systems, ensuring they are prepared for future challenges as technology progresses.
