Norway Mourns the Passing of King Harald V at 89
King Harald V of Norway has passed away at the age of 89, as confirmed by the Royal House of Norway. The royal palace released a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow over the king’s death, which occurred peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on August 28.
The country’s longest-serving monarch had been in the hospital since August 17, battling a blood infection. King Harald underwent a medical procedure in 2024, receiving a pacemaker after experiencing health issues during a vacation in Malaysia. His declining health led him to reduce his public appearances.
King Harald had been Norway’s head of state since 1991 and was known for being the first royal heir born in Norway in more than 500 years. His grandfather, King Haakon VII, became the first king of an independent Norway after it separated from Sweden in 1905.
Throughout his reign, King Harald was seen as a progressive leader who encouraged royal transparency and connection with the public. He once said, “If you’ve opened the gate it’s very difficult to close it again. I’m not sure I’d want to close it.”
During World War II, when the Nazis invaded Norway, young Harald and his mother fled to Sweden and later to the United States, where they found refuge at the White House, thanks to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Harald’s bond with Roosevelt grew as he often met with him during their stay in Maryland.
His son, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, is next in line to the throne and will become King Haakon VIII. Haakon’s wife, Mette-Marit, will take on the title of Queen. However, the couple has faced challenges in the past year, including Mette-Marit’s controversial past interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which she has since expressed regret over.
Additionally, Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, is dealing with legal issues, having been sentenced to four years in prison for rape and domestic violence.
As Norway reflects on the legacy of King Harald, the nation remembers his dedication to the throne and the people he served.
