FC Barcelona Scraps Spain World Cup Celebration Over Catalan Flag Dispute

FC Barcelona recently made the decision to cancel a planned tribute to their players who helped Spain win the World Cup. This change came just before their LaLiga home opener, amid ongoing tensions regarding the display of Catalan independence flags. Instead of celebrating their eight world champions, the atmosphere at Camp Nou was charged with a pro-independence sentiment.

The tribute ceremony was supposed to take place ahead of the match against Athletic Club. However, Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, stated that the club felt the current environment surrounding the game was not appropriate for such an event. “The ceremony to honor the world champions won’t occur because it’s not the right context. The Royal Spanish Football Federation supports our decision,” Laporta explained.

He added that football should bring people together rather than cause conflicts. The Estelada, a flag representing the independence movement, reflects the sentiments of many Barcelona supporters and Catalans, according to Laporta. “It’s a matter of free expression,” he noted.

The decision came after an incident at Barcelona’s previous league game against Elche, where a police officer confiscated an Estelada flag from a fan, leading to a confrontation. The club criticized the police’s heavy-handed approach and argued that the flag should not be viewed as a symbol of hate or aggression.

Instead of the tribute, Estelada flags became the prominent visual at Camp Nou during the match. A local group distributed about 10,000 Estelada flags to supporters, who waved them proudly during Barcelona’s anthem. Larger banners were also showcased inside the stadium, and many fans took part in a march around the venue.

Laporta stated that while Barcelona did not organize the flag display, he defended the right of supporters to carry their symbols. “We denounce the excessive force used by police against our fans for displaying the Estelada before the Elche match and demand accountability for those actions,” he urged.

The club’s decision to skip the tribute was especially noticeable as other teams in Spain had honored their World Cup-winning players during their opening matches, often with the presence of the national coach and the trophy. Barcelona had eight players represented in the victorious squad, more than any other club, and they were all set to be celebrated.

Despite the backdrop, Barcelona went on to win the match against Athletic Club 2-0, with goals from Raphinha and Fermin López sealing the victory. This win followed a resounding 5-0 victory against Elche in their first match of the season, giving them a strong start with a total of six points from two games.

Looking ahead, Barcelona will host Rayo Vallecano on August 31 before traveling to Valencia on September 6.
