Limiting Sugar in Early Life May Lead to Healthier Aging and Lower Cancer Risks
New research suggests that reducing sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life—starting from conception until their second birthday—could be key to promoting healthier aging and decreasing cancer risks many years later.
The study, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed data from over 64,000 individuals in the UK Biobank, focusing on those born between 1951 and 1956. The researchers took advantage of a significant change in the UK: after sugar rationing ended in September 1953, the average sugar consumption in the country nearly doubled, going from about 41 grams to 80 grams a day.
The researchers compared those who were born during the sugar rationing period to those conceived after it. They then tracked cancer occurrences about 50 years later, finding that individuals who experienced sugar restrictions during their early life stages tended to have lower rates of several types of cancer, including breast, lung, prostate, liver, and rectal cancers.
Additionally, those exposed to lower sugar levels in their formative years showed longer leukocyte telomeres, which are protective caps on chromosomes that usually shorten with age. This indicates about two years less of biological aging. They also had lower levels of Granzyme B, a protein linked to long-term inflammation and immune response.
The study’s authors proposed that two main factors could explain these beneficial outcomes: a biological imprint from early dietary habits and persistent healthy eating practices into adulthood. Remarkably, even five decades later, those who had limited sugar intake in their infancy continued to consume less sugar and had more varied and healthier diets.
Health experts emphasize the need for more research to confirm these findings, but they support the idea that early dietary habits can significantly affect long-term health outcomes. Weilong Zhang, one of the study’s authors from the University of Cambridge, expressed surprise at the lasting effects of early sugar exposure, noting that the differences were still evident nearly 50 years later.
Dr. Brian Slomovitz, deputy director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami Beach, commented on the study, calling it an “excellent hypothesis-generating study.” He pointed out concerns about sugar consumption, particularly its links to inflammation, which can lead to diseases including cancer.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, highlighted that high sugar intake is associated with metabolic disorders, and the study’s findings of lower cancer rates may align with a connection between early dietary habits and healthier eating patterns later in life.
However, some oncologists caution that studies based on historical data, like this one, can come with limitations. For instance, data collected in the 1950s might carry biases, and the number of cancer cases examined in the study was quite low.
Despite these uncertainties, Zhang warned against extreme dietary restrictions, advising instead to follow guidelines that suggest parents limit added sugar intake, especially during pregnancy and early childhood.
