Lifestyle Choices and Environment Impact Aging and Cell Health, Expert Says

New research suggests that our daily habits and the environment we live in can significantly influence our cell health and the aging process. Functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole, co-author of the upcoming book “Heal Your Cells,” shares insights on how modern lifestyle choices might be key factors in cellular dysfunction, which can affect inflammation, sleep, and overall well-being.

Dr. Cole, based in Pennsylvania, notes that while our genetics remain constant over time, the world we live in has changed dramatically. “The way we eat, the toxins in our environment, and our stress levels have all shifted,” he explains. He warns that these new pressures can lead to what he refers to as an “accelerated aging problem,” suggesting that many younger individuals are showing signs of aging typically seen in older adults.

“People in their 20s, 30s, and 40s can have cellular health akin to a senior citizen, which is quite common, but it’s not normal,” Dr. Cole says.

It’s easy for individuals to overlook or normalize issues like fatigue or brain fog, which can arise from various factors including lifestyle choices and mental health. Dr. Cole mentions that these problems may begin long before a formal medical diagnosis.

He identifies three main factors that disrupt cellular communication and may contribute to the rapid aging process:

### 1. Poor Diet
Eating unhealthy foods, particularly those that cause inflammation, is a significant issue for cell health, according to Dr. Cole. He emphasizes that sticking to a regular eating schedule is vital and eating indiscriminately throughout the day can upset the balance the body needs.

### 2. Chemical Exposures
Dr. Cole warns about harmful substances in our surroundings, including pesticides and certain chemicals like PFAS, often labeled as “forever chemicals.” The effects of these toxins depend on the type, exposure level, and duration of contact. Additionally, harmful pathogens and mold exposure can further complicate health.

### 3. Stress and Disconnection
Chronic stress and unresolved trauma can impact cellular health. Furthermore, Dr. Cole points out that a strong social or spiritual connection can mitigate these effects. Some studies suggest that those involved in religious or spiritual activities may have lower inflammatory markers and better health outcomes.

“Research shows that people who maintain a spiritual connection often lead longer, healthier lives,” he states. Dr. Cole encourages individuals to explore their relationship with spirituality or nature as a potential path to enhance well-being.

### Supporting a Healthy Body
Modern life can stress the body in ways that aren’t easily seen. “Cells can become confused and may struggle to function properly,” Dr. Cole explains. To combat this, he advocates for a holistic approach that includes paying attention to physical, mental, and spiritual health. By doing so, we might reduce the “noise” that hinders cellular function.

In summary, Dr. Cole’s advice highlights the importance of being mindful of our lifestyle, diet, and stress to maintain cellular health and promote a more youthful life.
