Indian Expats in the Gulf Welcome Supreme Court’s Airfare Regulation Move

Dubai: Indian expatriates in the UAE and other Gulf nations are pleased with the Indian Supreme Court’s recent decision to regulate airfare prices. They hope this step will ease the financial burden caused by high flight costs to and from India.

On August 17, the Supreme Court discussed this issue and examined draft regulations proposed by the government. The judges have given the Centre three weeks to finalize these rules before the court reconvenes.

The community organization Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC), actively involved in advocating for this issue, sees this development as a major win for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), migrant workers, and the broader expatriate community.

Latest Developments from the Court

The court is handling the case referenced as W.P.(C) No. 1124/2025 – S. Laxminarayanan vs. Union of India, where social activist S. Laxminarayanan has called for an independent body to ensure fairness and transparency in India’s airline sector. The petition aims to provide clear guidelines to manage the erratic fluctuations in airfare and additional fees imposed by private airlines.

During the court session, Additional Solicitor General Anil Kaushik presented the government’s draft rules in a sealed envelope. After the judges reviewed the contents, they agreed to give the government three weeks to finalize the regulations. The case will be heard again on September 7.

PLC, led by Global President Adv. Jose Abraham, has been fighting against high and unpredictable airfares while also addressing other concerns that impact Indians living abroad.

A Step Toward Dignity and Justice

TN Krishnakumar, President of the Pravasi Legal Cell in Dubai, stated that the court’s decision addresses long-standing issues within the community. He noted, “High airfare, especially during busy seasons, has troubled many NRIs and migrant workers.”

For many individuals earning lower to middle incomes abroad, sudden price spikes in flights can create significant financial stress for their families.

Adv. Jose Abraham emphasized that this issue is about “justice, dignity, and the welfare” of expatriates. He pointed out that for countless Indians living overseas, air travel is not merely a luxury, but an important link to their families and home country. “Unjustified fare hikes during peak times and emergencies put an unfair strain on ordinary workers and their families,” he added. He assured that PLC will keep supporting the legal process until a fair and lasting solution is reached.

Beyond Airfare Concerns

Adv. Jose Abraham mentioned that the problems surrounding airfare regulation are part of a larger mission for their organization. The PLC consists of retired judges, advocates, social activists, and concerned citizens who strive to empower people through legal support.

Reactions from Gulf Countries

Chapters of the PLC across the Gulf region are also expressing their support for this initiative. Jessy from the Oman chapter and Babu Francis from the Kuwait chapter highlighted that the pursuit of affordable airfares is about more than just consumer rights; it impacts social justice for millions of Indian expats who depend on reasonable fares to connect with their families.

The Pravasi Legal Cell is committed to collaborating with its chapters and legal experts to bring issues affecting the Indian community to the attention of the relevant authorities. They hope that these legal proceedings will lead to a reliable and transparent system for regulating airfares, protecting ordinary expatriate workers and their families from unexpected price hikes.
