Ishaan Tharoor Takes Aim at Trump’s India Voter ID Appeal: What MAGA Truly Values

American journalist Ishaan Tharoor recently responded to comments made by former President Donald Trump regarding India’s voter identification system. Tharoor emphasized that while it might seem straightforward to obtain a voter ID in India, the underlying issues that matter are the significant challenges faced by many regarding their eligibility on electoral rolls.

Tharoor’s remarks were made in reaction to a post by Trump on Truth Social. In this post, Trump highlighted a conversation with India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, who questioned how the U.S. conducts elections without requiring voter ID cards.

Trump noted that India’s last election involved 646 million voters, with less than 1% voting by mail, and insisted that all voters needed to present a valid photo ID. He called for the passing of the Save America Act, which aims to tighten voter ID requirements in the U.S.

Responding to Trump, Tharoor stated, “Despite the many challenges India faces, it is actually easier for an average Indian to obtain a photo ID than it is for many Americans in certain states.” He pointed out that the more concerning aspect, particularly for Trump supporters, is not merely the voter ID system but rather the Indian government’s capacity to remove many individuals from the electoral list for various bureaucratic reasons.

Additionally, Trump’s post followed a meeting between Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, where both discussed improving collaboration on election management and training for election officials.

Gor expressed his agreement with Trump’s statement, reiterating the importance of voter ID laws and encouraging the passage of the Save America Act. This proposed law aims to require voters to provide proof of citizenship when registering and a photo ID when casting their votes.

The debate over voter ID laws in the United States has been contentious, with advocates arguing that such measures are necessary to maintain election integrity amidst concerns about the legitimacy of recent elections.
