John shares how technology has changed his life, saying, “Before having the technology, I never went anywhere without my wife. I was really dependent on her for everything.” His wife, Heather, recalls the challenges of that time: “It was tough. Part of me felt I had to be there for him because he’s my husband, but some days I just wanted to step out for a moment without feeling guilty.”

The couple, married for 42 years, recently installed a video care phone and a smart speaker in their home. The care phone sits next to John, and his tablet features pictures of Heather and their two sons. If he wants to reach out, he simply taps their photo, and a video call is made.

Additionally, John wears a fall pendant that alerts him for help if he falls or needs assistance. With this technology, John can enjoy more independence in their home. He states, “I feel more like myself now.”

Heather notices a positive change in John as well, saying, “He’s gained more confidence.” She appreciates that she can now run to the corner shop without worrying constantly.

The smart speaker has also become a source of joy for them, allowing them to share their favorite music. Heather loves when John plays music in the morning: “It’s like I have the old John back when he sings along, and that’s just wonderful.” She adds, “We feel like more of a couple now than ever.”
