Investigators Dive Into Shooting of Iberian Orca Found Injured in Spain

Investigation Underway After Injuries Found on Oldest Known Orca

Authorities in Spain are looking into serious injuries observed on Toñi, the world’s oldest known Iberian orca. This discovery has sparked concerns that the iconic whale may have been deliberately harmed amidst an ongoing tension between orcas and boats in the region.

Toñi was recently spotted in the Strait of Gibraltar with fresh wounds on her dorsal fin and back. Wildlife experts believe these marks could be from shotgun pellets, as they were not present during previous sightings just weeks ago.

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) confirmed that they received reports about Toñi’s condition on August 11, thanks to the marine conservation group WeWhale, which works in the area with government backing. Following this, authorities began a preliminary investigation to uncover what happened and identify those responsible.

While officials haven’t confirmed that Toñi was shot, both WeWhale and the Iberian Orca Guardians suspect that the nature and pattern of her injuries indicate possible gunfire. Notably, they stated that the wounds appeared suddenly, highlighting the worry for Toñi’s health. WeWhale staff observed around ten noticeable puncture marks on the left side of her dorsal fin, with several projectiles possibly embedded inside.

At around 60 years old, Toñi is particularly vulnerable to complications from these injuries. The fin plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature and has a rich blood supply, making infection a serious concern. Currently, however, there are some positive signs, as Toñi seems to be swimming and hunting normally.

Janek Andre, founder of WeWhale, emphasized the shocking nature of the situation, stating, “We were with Toñi a few weeks ago, and the wounds were not there. If someone shot her, it’s not just cruel to one animal; it’s an attack on a declining species.”

Toñi, affectionately known as “La Abuela,” is a significant member of her population, which is already classified as vulnerable in the Strait of Gibraltar and Gulf of Cádiz. Spanish wildlife laws are strict regarding the protection of endangered species, and those found guilty of harming Toñi could face hefty fines up to 2 million euros (approximately $2.3 million) and possible criminal charges.

This investigation appears timely as there have been numerous reports of interactions between Iberian orcas and boats in the area over the last few years, prompting officials to issue safety guidelines for boaters to avoid harming the animals.

WeWhale has stated that such incidents should never be viewed as an acceptable reaction to encounters with orcas. As the investigation progresses, the conservation group plans to keep monitoring Toñi’s health and behavior closely, hoping for her complete recovery.

Currently, Spanish authorities have yet to disclose any suspects or leads related to this distressing case.
