AI: A Solution for India’s Healthcare Challenges
NEW DELHI: India’s healthcare system is facing significant challenges as it grapples with an aging population, increasing chronic diseases, and a shortage of medical professionals, according to a new report released by Union Health Minister J P Nadda.
The report highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) can help lessen this growing gap in healthcare access. By leveraging AI, the aim is to enhance specialist skills, improve diagnostic accuracy, and provide better healthcare, especially in smaller hospitals and remote areas.
The report, titled “AI in MedTech: Revolutionizing Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence,” was announced during the 9th edition of India Medical Device 2026, co-hosted by the Department of Pharmaceuticals and FICCI.
With India’s population projected to reach 1.47 billion by 2026, the document states that more than 65% of deaths will be linked to non-communicable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. By 2036, the number of people aged 60 and older is expected to exceed 230 million, increasing the demand for long-term health services.
Despite improvements in healthcare infrastructure and training, shortages remain a critical issue. Currently, there are only 9.6 doctors for every 10,000 people in India, compared to the global average of 18.3. Nursing staff are also lacking, with 27.2 nurses per 10,000 people, while the global standard is 40.5. Additionally, the availability of hospital beds is concerning: India has 15.9 beds per 10,000 people, far below the global average of 33. The report also highlights a deficit in MRI scanners, with only 4 per million people, compared to 19 globally.
Importantly, the report clarifies that AI is not meant to replace human doctors but to enhance their capabilities. By assisting in diagnosis and clinical decision-making, AI can help expand access to healthcare services, improve efficiency, and bridge gaps in care availability.
India has already started laying the groundwork for AI in healthcare through programs such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, IndiaAI Mission, SAHI, BODH, and the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023. Looking ahead, the challenge remains to transition successful AI projects into everyday clinical settings by creating suitable health data systems, establishing a clear regulatory framework, and ensuring reimbursement options for AI technologies.
