Concerns Raised Over Injury Management at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence
VVS Laxman, the head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), has responded firmly to recent criticism aimed at the Bengaluru facility, especially amidst rising injuries within the Indian cricket team. He emphasized that the CoE’s role is much broader than just treating injured players.
In the past few weeks, many Indian cricketers have faced injuries, leading to questions about how injuries are being managed and the communication between the sports science team and the national selection committee. Addressing these concerns at a press conference in Bengaluru, Laxman clarified, “The CoE is not just a rehabilitation center. It plays a vital role in helping players reach their best.”
He also highlighted that injuries are a common part of any athlete’s career, and rather than blaming individuals or departments, it’s important to focus on monitoring systems. “Injuries will happen; it’s part of the game. We shouldn’t look for scapegoats,” he remarked.
Amid all this, the CoE has been facilitating rehabilitation for players like Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, particularly as India prepares for a crucial Test series against Sri Lanka beginning on August 15. Bumrah’s absence is a major concern as the team aims to secure a favorable outcome in the World Test Championship.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia is expected to visit the CoE soon to evaluate the injury management protocols. Several players, including Sai Sudharsan, Harshit Rana, and Washington Sundar, are currently facing fitness issues, which adds to the urgency of this review.
Interestingly, the workload on the sports science team has increased, as the BCCI is still looking for a permanent head following Nitin Patel’s departure in early 2025. Currently, Dhananjay Kaushik is overseeing operations.
The BCCI is keen not only to address the injuries but also to ensure that the timelines shared by the CoE align with the selectors’ expectations. For instance, while both Sudharsan and Bumrah were initially included in the squad with conditions relating to their fitness, the CoE later took a cautious approach regarding their readiness.
Concerns especially arose over Harshit Rana, who returned from a long injury break only to face another setback. Questions about his timely recovery and fitness approval have been the topic of much discussion.
Moreover, differences in opinions between the CoE and selection committee about players’ fitness timelines are becoming more apparent. Bumrah’s situation is a primary example, where expectations differed significantly from the reality of his recovery process.
The CoE’s reputation is now under scrutiny concerning whether its facilities and the sports science department are effectively managing injuries and ensuring safe and timely player returns. As the BCCI awaits a more permanent resolution regarding leadership in sports science, the ongoing analysis of rehabilitation protocols is critical.
With pressing questions about communication gaps and player assessments, the BCCI is set to review its entire injury-management structure, making Saikia’s upcoming meeting with Laxman a crucial step in addressing these challenges.
