India and China Reopen Border Trade at Nathu La
After a six-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, India and China have once again started border trade through the historic Silk Route at Nathu La, beginning Saturday. This move signals a positive step in rebuilding relations between the two nations.
Border trade at Nathu La first opened on July 6, 2006, but was put on hold during the pandemic. The trade will follow agreed standard operating procedures and is set to continue for six months, from May to November. Currently, 36 items have been approved for trade, which will take place from Monday to Thursday each week.
Officials noted that only a limited number of permits have been issued so far, though up to 400 traders may receive approvals during the trading season. The facilities at the Nathu La Integrated Check Post, which had deteriorated during the long shutdown and harsh winters, have now been restored and are fully operational.
Security measures have also been heightened for this reopening. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is deploying additional personnel, including an all-women unit for the first time, to support trade operations.
Currently, Indian exports include handcrafted items, textiles, blankets, agricultural tools, processed foods, dried vegetables, herbs, ready-made garments, utensils, and religious items. On the other hand, imports from Tibet will encompass ready-made clothing, footwear, products made from yak, butter, borax, goats, quilts, and other accepted commodities.
Following the India-China War in 1962, this route was closed for 44 years and was only reopened in 2006. The revival of trade was widely seen as a means to boost confidence and improve living conditions in border areas. However, the pandemic led to a halt in trade and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra across Nathu La in 2020.
The recent reopening is viewed as a hopeful sign that exchanges between India and China are returning to normal, particularly as it comes just weeks after the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathu La.
