Study Finds 8-Hour Eating Window Could Boost Brain Health in Women

Eating Less May Boost Brain Health in Older Women

New research has found that changing eating patterns might support better brain health in older adults. A study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition suggests that older women who eat in a smaller time frame of eight to nine hours each day may see improvements in cognitive function compared to those who eat over 12 hours.

Study Overview

The study involved 47 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 who were either overweight or obese. Participants were asked to cut their daily caloric intake by about 500 calories.

They were divided into two groups: one group ate within about 8.2 hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., while the other group had a more extended eating window of around 12.3 hours. Both groups managed to lose about 15 pounds over six months, but the shorter-eating-window group showed better scores in cognitive tests, especially in areas like problem-solving and memory.

Encouraging Results

Research lead Sue Shapses, a professor at Rutgers University, noted, “The results indicate a better ability to remember information and reduced mistakes in tasks.” She believes that less time spent eating could lead to greater cognitive improvements.

While the study had a small sample size, the researchers think that this eating pattern might help brain health by regulating the body’s internal clock and reducing inflammation.

Losing weight alone can also help reduce cognitive decline related to aging. Shapses mentioned that stopping food intake four hours before sleep and limiting eating to eight to nine hours could provide additional benefits.

Expert Reactions

Lauri Wright, a nutrition expert from the University of South Florida, commented on the findings. She noted that meal timing might be just as important as the type of food we consume. However, she emphasized the need for larger and longer studies before recommending such eating patterns specifically for brain health.

Experts are still exploring how intermittent fasting affects the brain. Wright explained that giving the body longer breaks from food might improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation, which are all linked to healthy aging of the brain.

Practical Insights

Many nutritionists believe that eating in a limited timeframe can help reduce caloric intake, leading to weight loss. Robin DeCicco, a holistic nutritionist, highlighted that fasting provides organs with a chance to rest and can lower inflammation markers, which can benefit overall health.

Intermittent fasting isn’t the only method for supporting cognitive health, according to Wright. Regular exercise, enough sleep, managing blood pressure, and maintaining a healthy social life are all crucial for protecting cognitive function over time.

However, Wright cautioned that intermittent fasting might not be suitable for everyone, especially children, pregnant women, and those with eating disorders or diabetes. It’s best to consult a healthcare professional before making significant changes to eating habits.

The findings from this study indicate that meal timing could be a valuable aspect of maintaining cognitive health, especially for older women. As further research unfolds, understanding how dietary patterns impact brain function could lead to better health strategies as we age.
