LONDON — In a historic match at Lord’s, India triumphed over England by an impressive 270 runs in the first-ever women’s test held at this iconic cricket ground. Sneh Rana played a key role in securing the victory, claiming two important wickets, even as Sophie Ecclestone fought hard with a half-century for England.
Resuming play on the final day with a score of 130-6, England faced a daunting target of 457 runs—more than double the highest successful chase in women’s test history.
India swiftly sealed the win, with Rana dismissing Amy Jones, England’s top scorer, who had made 54 runs, followed by Deepti Sharma taking two wickets in quick succession. Although Ecclestone managed to score her first test half-century and partnered with No. 11 Lauren Filer, she was eventually bowled by Rana for 50 runs, leaving England all out at 186.
The match was full of personal achievements. Kranti Gaud, a fast bowler for India, made history by being the first woman to feature on Lord’s honors boards for taking five wickets in a match. Additionally, Yastika Bhatia shone with a brilliant score of 113, marking the first women’s test century at this famed venue, while Ecclestone added five wickets to her tally in India’s second innings.
After the match, it was announced that England’s Tammy Beaumont and former captain Heather Knight will be retiring from international cricket.
This win is a significant boost for India, especially after their earlier disappointment of not reaching the semifinals in the Women’s T20 World Cup. For England, this loss at Lord’s adds to their woes following their recent defeat to Australia in the T20 World Cup final held at the same ground.
