Dinesh Karthik Weighs in on Potential Andy Flower Appointment as England’s Test Coach
Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik believes that Andy Flower would be an excellent candidate to take over as England’s Test coach, following the recent departure of Brendon McCullum. However, Karthik thinks it’s pretty unlikely that Flower, who currently coaches the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, would leave his commitments to take this role.
After England’s disappointing run in Test cricket led to McCullum’s exit, Flower’s name has come up as a strong contender. Former England captain Nasser Hussain has publicly supported Flower, emphasizing the attention to detail he brought during his prior coaching tenure.
Karthik, who worked alongside Flower during the Royal Challengers’ successful IPL 2026 campaign, shared his thoughts on Sky Sports. “He would be a fantastic candidate,” he said. Despite this, Karthik expressed doubt that Flower would take the job given his busy schedule and England’s current situation.
Flower has been focusing on franchise cricket, and Karthik questioned whether England could realistically work around his existing obligations, particularly since the IPL overlaps with parts of the international calendar.
He remarked, “I saw an article suggesting England would be fine with Flower coaching both the IPL and Test cricket. But with the calendar as it stands… when players are unavailable, it raises questions.”
The Challenge of a Packed Schedule
Karthik also highlighted that Flower’s contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru could complicate matters if England decides to pursue him. He pointed out that if Flower is committed to RCB, he would miss some Tests, posing a challenge for England, especially with the Ashes approaching.
“There’s a Test match against Bangladesh in May, and if Flower is tied up with RCB, it could be problematic,” Karthik noted. Although he acknowledged Flower’s impressive abilities, he again reflected on the logistics: “Is he qualified? Absolutely. Is there time? That’s the big question.”
Calls for Flower’s Return
McCullum’s dismissal came after England’s performance declined sharply, winning just three of their last twelve matches, including a significant defeat in the Ashes series against Australia. Nasser Hussain has urged England’s cricket management to consider Flower, who previously led England to three Ashes victories and helped them reach the top of the ICC Test rankings between 2009 and 2014.
Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, has stated that no formal applications have been made yet but confirmed that the recruitment process will start soon. He also mentioned the possibility of hiring a coach still involved in franchise cricket if it means finding the right person.
Despite this flexibility, Karthik feels that balancing the responsibilities of the England Test team and a long-term IPL role with RCB would be incredibly challenging, making Flower’s return to the England coaching staff unlikely.
