Prime Minister Modi Embarks on Tour to Strengthen Ties with Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand
On July 6, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set off for a significant visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. This trip, lasting until July 11, aims to boost India’s Act East Policy and the MAHASAGAR Vision, as well as reinforce India’s commitment to a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
In his departure statement, Mr. Modi expressed that this journey would enhance India’s growing relationships with these three nations. “My visit will further strengthen our Act East Policy and our outlook toward a free and open Indo-Pacific,” he noted.
MAHASAGAR, which stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across Regions, outlines India’s vision for safety and growth across all regions.
Starting in Indonesia, Mr. Modi will meet with President Prabowo Subianto from July 6 to 8. This marks his first bilateral visit since the two countries established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his previous visit in 2018. The Prime Minister highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between India and Indonesia, which will be further deepened during this visit.
Mr. Modi plans to engage with the Indian community in Indonesia and visit the Prambanan Temple complex at Yogyakarta, a symbol of the cultural bond shared by both nations.
Following Indonesia, he will fly to Melbourne at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Here, he aims to strengthen the already established Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, focusing on defense, trade, education, and community connections.
In Melbourne, Mr. Modi will also meet with the Indian diaspora, who play a vital role in enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Australia. He expressed enthusiasm about discussing advancements in critical technologies, sports, and sports science during his visit.
Lastly, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Auckland, New Zealand, at the invitation of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. This segment of the tour aims to build on the successful momentum from Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025. Mr. Modi intends to bolster economic and commercial ties, especially following the signing of their recent Free Trade Agreement.
Overall, this tour represents a major step forward in fostering India’s relationships with these three key nations in the region, highlighting shared interests and mutual growth.
