The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) held its 2026 Convention from July 2 to 5 in Tampa, Florida, coinciding with the 250th Anniversary of the United States. The event took place at the JW Marriott and Tampa Marriott Water Street, blending aspects of medicine, culture, and philanthropy while advocating for stronger US-India collaboration.
AAPI President Dr. Amit Chakravarty presented the Humanitarian Award to Nita Ambani of the Reliance Foundation, who acknowledged the contributions of Indian American physicians and stressed the importance of healthcare cooperation between the two nations. She emphasized that the relationship between India and the U.S. is strengthened by professionals like those in AAPI. A significant partnership was announced to enhance rural healthcare, focusing on preventive medicine and women’s health.
Attendees enjoyed a variety of initiatives and recognized achievers throughout the convention. Additionally, the city of Tampa honored Ambani and Dr. Chakravarty with a key to the city, declaring July 2 as AAPI Day.
Dr. Chakravarty highlighted the significance of this convention, stating it was the only official AAPI Annual Convention recognized by the national organization. Incoming AAPI President Dr. Meher Medavaram expressed her vision to lead with unity and integrity, ensuring the event set a new standard of excellence.
The convention also emphasized education through Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions covering diverse healthcare topics including Lifestyle Medicine and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. Young physicians led engaging discussions, showcasing promising research from the next generation.
Beyond science, the event featured spiritual and cultural sessions, including heartfulness meditation and motivational talks. Daily sessions began with prayers and included a keynote from Didi Krishna of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission.
The Mayor of Tampa, Jane Castor, expressed her admiration for Ambani’s speech and contributions while celebrating a week filled with cultural festivities. From lively concerts and performances to Bollywood Zumba and talent shows, the event encapsulated the spirit and achievements of the community.
